Σατανιστικές τελετές, εγκλήματα, πνεύματα και μια... αλήθεια που στέκει πολύ μακριά απ' όλα αυτά Μια μέρα σαν σήμερα το 1977 το «Hotel California» των «Eagles» ανέβαινε στο Νο1 των αμερικάνικων τσαρτς και ξεκινούσε την πορεία του προς την... αθανασία. Πλέον το τραγούδι θεωρείται ένα από τα καλύτερα και γνωστότερα στην ιστορία της ροκ μουσικής. Το «Hotel California» όμως είναι και το κομμάτι που το ακολουθούν οι περισσότερες ιστορίες. Οι σκοτεινοί του στίχοι δημιούργησαν μύθους για το τι πραγματικά μιλάει και ποια ιστορία ενέπνευσε τους..... δημιουργούς του. Τι είναι το «θηρίο», το «πνεύμα» και η «τελετή» με τα «ατσάλινα μαχαίρια»; Μιλάει για κάποιο έγκλημα, κάποια σατανιστική τελετή ή κάτι διαφορετικό. Θα ακολουθήσουμε λοιπόν όλους τους αστικούς μύθους που ακολουθούν το... στοιχειωμένο ξενοδοχείο για να φτάσουμε στην εξήγηση που έδωσαν τα μέλη του συγκροτήματος. Οι «Eagles» κυκλοφόρησαν το single στις αρχές του 1977 και χρειάστηκαν τρεις μήνες για να ανέβει στο Νο1. Οι στίχοι του όμως δημιούργησαν άμεσα αίσθηση σε μια περίοδο μάλιστα που τα εγκλήματα ήταν πολλά. Ο κουρασμένος ταξιδιώτης που αναγκαστικά πάει στο ξενοδοχείο και βλέπει πολλά περίεργα δημιουργεί μύθος και συνειρμούς με γεγονότα της εποχής. Οι μύθοι... Η ιστορία που κυριαρχεί είναι αυτή που συνδέει το τραγούδι με την «Εκκλησιά του Σατανά» και τον Άντον ΛαΒέι γνωστό ως «Μαύρο Πάπα». Αυτός ο μύθος θέλει το τραγούδι να αναφέρεται σε ένα ξενοδοχείο που είχε αγοράσει ο σατανιστής, ΛαΒέι στο Σαν Φρανσίσκο το οποίο μετέτρεψε στην «Εκκλησία του Σατανά» και εκεί έγραψε τη «Σατανική Βίβλο». Μάλιστα λένε ότι στη φωτογραφία στο οπισθόφυλλο του δίσκου σε ένα παράθυρο ψηλά αριστερά εμφανίζεται η μορφή του ΛαΒέι που προειδοποιεί τους αθώους από κάτω του. Γενικότερα πολλά έχουν ακουστεί για τις φωτογραφίες. Κάποι λένε ότι είναι από την «Εκκλησία του Σατανά» ενώ αναφέρουν πως η κάμερα έπιασε και τις μορφές κάποιων πνευμάτων. Ένας μύθος θέλει στις πρώτες φωτογραφίες που βγήκαν από το ξενοδοχείο να εμφανίζεται κάποιος στην είσοδο ενώ στην πραγματικότητα δεν ήταν κανείς. Επίσης ο μαύρος καθαριστής που βρίσκεται σε μια φωτογραφία λέγεται ότι είναι ένα θύμα του ΛαΒέι που θυσιάστηκε. Όσο για τους στίχους θεωρούν ότι μιλάει για μια σατανιστική τελετή. Το «δεν έχουμε αυτό το πνεύμα εδώ από το 1969» αναφέρεται στον Χριστό και το γεγονός ότι η σατανιστική ομάδα αυτή δημιουργήθηκε το 1969. Φυσικά τα μέλη των «Eagles» έχουν κατηγορηθεί ότι ασπάζονται τον Σατανισμό. Άλλη άποψη θέλει το «they stub with their steely knives» να αναφέρεται στον Στίλι Νταν με τον οποίο οι φήμες ήθελαν τα μέλη του συγκροτήματος να έχουν διαμάχη. Φυσικά υπάρχει και το κλασικό ότι αν ακούσεις ανάποδα τον δίσκο έχει διαβολικά μηνύματα. Μια διαφορετική εκδοχή θέλει το κομμάτι να αναφέρεται στο ψυχιατρείο του «Καμαρίγιο» και όσα γίνονταν εκεί. Το παρατσούκλι του ψυχιατρείου ήταν «Hotel California» και ο συνειρμός έγινε λογικά. Επίσης έχει ακουστεί ότι αναφέρεται σε ένα ξενοδοχείο στη Σκοτία που έγιναν κάποια εγκλήματα αλλά και ένα μικρό μοτέλ στην Καλιφόρνια που οι ιδιοκτήτες του (ένα ζευγάρι) σκότωναν τους ενοίκους και έθαβαν τα πτώματα τους στο υπόγειο. Τέλος υπάρχει και η απλή σκέψη ότι το τραγούδι γράφτηκε για ένα ξενοδοχείο που είχαν περάσει κάποιες νύχτες τα μέλη των «Eagles». Η αλήθεια... Η πραγματικότητα όμως δεν είναι ούτε τόσο ζοφερή, ούτε έχει να κάνει με φόνους η σατανιστικές τελετές. Αναφορικά με τις φωτογραφίες αυτές πάρθηκαν από ένα ξενοδοχείο στο Μπέβερλι Χιλς και όχι από την «Εκκλησία του Σατανά». Η εικόνα στο παράθυρο που λέγεται ότι είναι το ΛαΒέι είναι απλά μια κοπέλα που είχε προσληφθεί από το συνεργείο που έκανε τη φωτογράφιση. Το ίδιο ισχύει και για τον καθαριστή. Το «warm smell of colitαs» που έχει αναλυθεί ποικιλότροπος απλά αναφέρεται στη μαριχουάνα. Colitas είναι το όνομα της στα Μεξικάνικα. Όσο τώρα για τους στίχους δεν έχουν καμία σχέση με σατανισμό. Τα μέλη του συγκροτήματος έχουν δηλώσει πως το τραγούδι μιλάει για την το κλίμα της εποχής και την απληστία στην Καλιφόρνια τη δεκαετία το '70. Ήθελαν να στείλουν ένα μήνυμα για την άσωτη ζωή που οδηγούσε στην καταστροφή. Μια ζωή που έκαναν και οι ίδιοι στο παρελθόν. «Το τραγούδι ήθελε να πιάσει το πνεύμα της εποχής που ήταν μια περίοδος τεράστιας επιτυχίας για τη χώρα αλλά και τη μουσική βιομηχανία. Το άλμπουμ υπογράμμιζε τη διαφθορά των ροκ σταρς που προέρχονται από τη βιομηχανία του Λας Άντζελες. Ο τίτλος παρουσιάζει απλά την Καλιφόρνια σαν μια ωραιοποιημένη φυλακή που αφήνει τους καλλιτέχνες να μπαίνουν ελεύθερα μόνο για να ανακαλύψουν ότι δεν μπορούν να ξεφύγουν από εκεί. Το πράγματικο Hotel California δεν είναι ένα μέρος είναι μια μεταφορά για τη μουσική βιομηχανία της δυτικής ακτής και το πόσο επηρεάζει τους ταλαντούχους που βρίσκουν τους εαυτούς τους εγκλωβισμένους σε έναν ωραιοποιημένο ιστό» δήλωσε για το κομμάτι το μέλος των «Eagles», Ντόν Χένλεϊ. Παρόμοιες δηλώσεις έχει κάνει και ο Ντον Φέλντερ που μίλησε για τραγούδι με κοινωνικοπολιτικό μήνυμα.
